Airborne measurements of forest and agricultural land surface emissivity at millimeter wavelengths

چکیده

Passive microwave radiometers have been operated on an aircraft over the same (N OPEX) area of Sweden, near Uppsala in September 1995 and March 1907. Their measurements have allowed the calculation of the emissivity of boreal forest and agricultural land surfaces at 24, 50, 89 and 157 GHz over a range of incidence angles and polarisations. These results show consistent differences between dense forestry, where the emissivity is close to 1 and open land, where it is approximately 0.96. These differences are examined and a model is presented to parameterise these surfaces by use of a Debye-like effective permittivity and Fresnel’s reflection coefficients.

Remote sensing of evapotranspiration and carbon uptake at Harvard Forest

A land surface vegetation index, defined as the difference of microwave land surface emissivity at 19 and 37 GHz, was calculated for a heavily forested area in north central Massachusetts. The microwave emissivity difference vegetation index (EDVI) was estimated from satellite SSM/I measurements at the defined wavelengths and used to estimate land surface turbulent fluxes. Narrowband visible an...

Emissivity measurements of reflective surfaces at near-millimeter wavelengths.

We have developed an instrument for directly measuring the emissivity of reflective surfaces at near-millimeter wavelengths. The thermal emission of a test sample is compared with that of a reference surface, allowing the emissivity of the sample to be determined without heating. The emissivity of the reference surface is determined by one's heating the reference surface and measuring the incre...

Millimeter-wave Measurement of Frozen Hydrometeors

Snowfall is an important component of the Earth’s precipitation and hydrological cycle. Remote measurements of frozen hydrometeor properties have been limited because coincident measurements of microphysical and electromagnetic properties of snowfall have not been available. Ground-based radars have been widely used to monitor snowfall intensity, but even those measurements are difficult to rel...

GLORI: A GNSS-R Dual Polarization Airborne Instrument for Land Surface Monitoring

Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) has emerged as a remote sensing tool, which is complementary to traditional monostatic radars, for the retrieval of geophysical parameters related to surface properties. In the present paper, we describe a new polarimetric GNSS-R system, referred to as the GLObal navigation satellite system Reflectometry Instrument (GLORI), dedicated to ...

An Improvement on Land Surface Temperature Determination by Producing Surface Emissivity Maps

Emissivity mapping of the Earth’s surface is the prerequisite to thermal remote sensing. A precise determinationof a surface's temperature is dependent upon the availability of precise emissivity data for that surface. The presentstudy area is a part of sugarcane plantation fields in the west part of Khuzestan province. In this work, TemperatureEmissivity Separation algorithm (TES) was applied ...
